What to Wear for Holiday Family Pictures?

As a fashion stylist, "What should my family wear for holiday pictures?" is a question I’m asked all the time. Whether it’s just the two of you or it’s a large family gathering, deciding what to wear requires some thought. Here are a few fashion starter ideas to get your family picture perfect for your holiday portraits.

Red is a classic holiday color and typically looks great on everyone.  Consider starting with a base color for everyone like black, white, grey or a combination like khaki and cream.  Next, layer everyone in the portrait with a pop of red. Mom can wear red heels, Dad can wear a red tie, one of the children can wear red hair accessories or sweater.  Make sure the reds are the same shade. Purchasing red pops of color and laying them side by side will ensure that everyone in the picture has the same red.

For some families a nice holiday print may be a nice change, but key is to make the print a tasteful accent. Scatter the print between family members so it does not overpower the photo.  A good idea is to purchase Mommy and me dresses or Father and son pairings like matching ties.  Another way to scatter holiday prints in your fashion would be to only wear scarves or hats. This is especially nice if the portrait will take place outdoors.

A lot of families want a fun and casual holiday portrait that showcases their personality and is not too over the top.  A great way to showcase your favorite family team is with matching sweatshirts.  To dress up the sweatshirts pair each family member in the same shade of denim and matching colored shoes or sneakers.  Another fun and casual family portrait is with matching sweaters and Santa hats.

During the holidays many families use their holiday card to dress in formal attire to take their portrait. A fun formal portrait with gowns and tuxedos is on the far side of the fashion spectrum and can make for a great holiday card.  Dress all of the women and girls in your portrait in coordinating color gowns and the men and boys with matching ties and handkerchiefs. If your family is not that formal a classic Sunday best suit and dress is a great alternative.
