College Days: How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Freshman Year

Time to head back to dorm life, classes and good times. Shopping for a college wardrobe is more about quality and utility versus quantity.  It’s all about making your wardrobe last all semester by purchasing outfits versus random items. Here’s how to maximize your wardrobe for the fall semester.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

It’s a minimal, interchangeable wardrobe with a finite number made up of clothes you actually love to wear. The key is a finite, quality, interchangeable wardrobe! Less is more with this concept and quality is valued over quantity.  A capsule wardrobe for a college student is a perfect time to start from scratch as a young adult, preparing for a career.

How to start?

First you will need a base wardrobe. A base wardrobe is what you need for categories beyond day-to-day dressing. For example, build your base wardrobe around 50 pieces that will not change throughout the semester – 10 items in 5 different categories. Feel free to change the numbers to suit your lifestyle.

Workout (tops and bottoms)

Lounge (pajamas, college paraphernalia, comfy sweatshirts)

(tank tops and tees)

Outerwear (jackets, coats)

Accessories (necklaces, scarves, earrings)

More than likely you already have these items in your closet.  It’s time to reduce the number to 10 items per category and shop for whatever you don’t have in your base wardrobe. Remember quality items are key even in your base wardrobe.

The Capsule Collection:

First, identify three primary outfit categories that are most relevant to your lifestyle.

  • Daily/Casual
  • Work/Formal
  • Fun/Social

Next it’s time to put the collection together:

  • 9 TOPS
  • 5 BOTTOMS
  • 5 SHOES

Based on your primary outfit categories shop for nine tops, five bottoms & five pair of shoes only.  These items paired with your base will sustain you for the semester.  It may not seem like a lot but it’s about the quality.  Make sure to shop for these items as if it is a collection that can be interchangeable.
