5 Back to School Shopping Tips for Elementary School Kids

This is the time of year when parents become inundated with lists for back to school.  It’s easy to find lists for school supplies, but what about lists for clothing?  Parents, before you sit down to make a list on what to buy your little one take these 5 tips into consideration when shopping for a new wardrobe this season.

Before heading out to shop, take inventory of your child’s summer wardrobe.  During the first few months of school the weather is still warm and it’s more than acceptable to wear summer clothing from vacation for school.  Take this time to add on to your child’s summer wardrobe with a few updates.  Look for t-shirts to pair with denim, or new shoes to pair with summer dresses. These few additions can add to your child’s back to school wardrobe and expand summer clothes that will more than likely not fit next summer.

Back to school sales and specials will be highlighted everywhere.  Take the time to only focus on the stores that your child enjoys. Shopping at a few stores for favorites will help keep the attention on your child’s wardrobe needs versus the best deal.  Shopping your favorite stores also guarantees that your purchases will be loved and more importantly, worn over and over!

Duality is key when school shopping.  Figure out what afterschool activities your child will participate in and shop accordingly.  For example, if your child plays basketball on certain days after school, purchasing basketball sneakers for afterschool can be worn as a school outfit.  Don’t forget recess! Consider purchasing items with great quality to withstand repeated laundering. When purchasing knits, go with fabric that’s denser than loose, with limited stretching.

Make a list together! Let your child pick some things to get them excited about the new school year.  A good idea is to let your child pick shoes and accessories like backpacks and lunch bags.  Allow your child to pick one thing that is a fun thing for school like a sequin backpack from Justice or JIBBITZ™ shoe charms for their Crocs.

Stretch your child’s back to school wardrobe by shopping for lots of basics.  Graphic t-shirts with the latest characters can go out of style before the end of the school year.  Consider shopping trends and the latest characters in accessories like belts, jewelry and backpacks.
