If you have a formal event to attend, the options can seem even more limited as an expecting mother. Dressing chic in formal wear is not impossible.  Start by checking out what is in style, then shop at the right retailers.  Don’t forget to add your own creativity to your outfit with the right shoes, dazzling accessories and perfect hairstyle.  Marcia Howard, handbag designer and mother of two, soon to be three, shows us how to be holiday chic as an expectant mother.

Keep up on the latest formal wear fashions.

Keep up with designers who specialize in formal wear and and adapt it to your maternity style when shopping. Trends will give you an idea of what people are wearing; Marcia chose a dress that is popular in color.  This season’s hot color is red, so she had no problem adapting that to her maternity formalwear. Sometimes adapting a trend whether it’s a style or a color will help you when choosing maternity formalwear and make you feel like you just walked out of a fashion magazine.

Consider what looks good on you.

You know your own style better than anyone. Those same colors and styles that look good on your when you are not pregnant look good when expecting too! If you have great legs wear a shorter dress that is befitting the occasion. Wearing your signature color is also a great way to feel like a million bucks.

Marcia is wearing a Lauren Ralph Lauren Metallic-Knit dress from Macy’s with slimming draped pleats and an alluring slit at the leg it adds extra appeal to this sleek silhouette showing off her great curves and legs!

Take a hint from pregnant celebrities.

Hollywood gets obsessed when someone from the A-list is expecting. Pay attention to what those women are wearing to premieres, award ceremonies and other formal events and take your que.  Tear out a few pictures from magazines and bring them along on your shopping trip.  Did you know that many celebrities do not wear maternity formalwear, but rather runway dresses in a larger size?  Consider shopping in the formalwear section of a department store.

Shop outside of maternity sizes.

Once you decide to buy your formal dress in a department store , plan to purchase a dress a couple sizes larger than your non-pregnant size. Have it fitted in the areas that it is still too big. For example, when you buy a size that fits your belly, you might need to have the sleeves shortened. Making these small adjustments are easy by taking them to Lee’s tailor across from Kanki. They are fast, and dependable with your garments.

Marcia is wearing Lauren Ralph Lauren Jersey Surplice Gown from Macys.  This gown can be found in the formalwear section and it is flawless for an expecting mother.  The crystal brooch with pleats and a cascading ruffle, is a perfect highlight of the “baby bump” and the jersey gown in eye-catching red has beautiful movement, marrying style and fit for a great holiday dress.

So moms-to-be don’t fret the possibilities are endless when it comes to holiday formalwear.  Also shop these retailers for maternity formalwear:
